The Location

16th Century Stonebarrow Manor stands in 2 acres of garden, on the South West Coastal Path at the foot of Stonebarrow Hill on the edge of the lovely Regency village of Charmouth, West Dorset. Here is a perfect base for walking and fossil hunting along the world famous 'Jurassic Coast'.

The coastline is now part of a World Heritage Site, the first such landscape designation in the UK, ranking it alongside such natural wonders as the Grand Canyon and the Great Barrier Reef. The status was conferred by UNESCO in recognition of the areas unique natural history. The Heritage Coast Centre situated by the beach a few minutes walk away has a comprehensive multimedia exhibition.

Things to do in the area

There is a huge range of local activities available including swimming, walking, golf, horse riding across Golden Cap, paint balling, quad biking, and fishing. Adults and older children will enjoy fossil hunting on the beach which can be rewarding, educational and very addictive. Charmouth village has a pharmacy, a G.P Surgery, 2 small supermarkets, a butchers, Post Office, newsagents, 2 hairdressers, 2 pubs, and a fish & chip shop.
There is also a huge choice of local gourmet pubs & restaurants including the Hix Oyster and Fish House, the Hive Beach Cafe, and River Cottage.
Two miles away lies Lyme Regis, The town's narrow streets are lined with many listed buildings and delightful shops with a profusion of art, crafts, books, antiques and specialist food shops and eateries. At the western end of the town is 'The Cobb' (right) an ancient harbour wall. From the harbour you can take boat trips to fish or just enjoy the stunning coastline.

Charmouth is perfectly positioned for day excursions to East Devon (the Donkey Sanctuary being a favourite) or east to the Georgian town of Bridport and "Hardy" country to Dorchester. A little further afield are Abbotsbury with the Swannery and Tropical Gardens and the bustling resort of Weymouth. Local markets are in Bridport, Axminster, Dorchester and Honiton and local towns are excellent hunting grounds for antiques and rare books. There are several beaches nearby including the famous Chesil Beach and wonderful walks across the cliffs or local paths and nature reserves. The area is one of "outstanding natural beauty" and perfect for an active or relaxing holiday or centre for touring.
